Dictation

Dictation has long been used in fields where human life and valuable assets are at stake, such as Medicine and Law.  But with the advancement of technology and an increase in availability of quality dictation equipment, the practice is being used in many more fields.

Dictation actually refers to the first step in a two-step process. First, the practitioner records their notes and observations audibly using a portable voice recorder, a computer with a microphone, or a telephone service.  The second step is transcription, where another individual listens to the recording and carefully types it up word-for-word.

As speech-recognition technology advances even further, we expect these two steps to be merged into one: the practitioner will be able to speak into a recorder or their computer's microphone, and an exact, error-free, word-for-word text copy will be produced while the words are being spoken.
